I really liked the layout of the museum. You took the elevator to the top, the 6th floor, and circled your way down. The layout made the whole place look bigger and brighter. Thre wasn't the usual stuffiness of museums. The art was more modern and took a little getting used to. Photography was not allowed inside the museum except where you first walk in.

This is the Metropolitain Museum in NYC. It is massive. I actually haven't been in there in a long time. I remember the Egyptian exhibit from before, but forgot how impressive it really is. The extent the Ancient Egyptians creativity and expertise in art is amazing. It was a gorgeous Sunday morning and there were a ton of people in the museum.

This is the Wadsworth in Hartford. There was a great exhibit of photography in the museum. I love the different Buggies and their different accidents. Unfortunately the day I was there, there was an event going on. Plenty of tables being set up that it made it very hard to get closer to a few of the paintings.

This is the Whitney in NYC. It actually was my least favorite museum. Two of the floors were shut off having the next exhibits installed. The ones that were open had very very modern art where it became difficult to appreciate. There was this part of the floor on one of the floors, I think it was the fourth floor, where the floor was mirrored. My friend who went with me and I were both wearing skirts. We both were about to step onto it, and jumped all the way back noticing the floor. We were quite amused.

This the the Yale Museum of British Art. It is basically Modern art. I thought the wax portait above was very impressive. That medium is extremely hard to manuver and the detail is amazing. I loved the arches in the top left painting. I just finished my final post on my visit to the MET. What an amazing place! I can't wait to go back. I am also planning on hitting MOMA within the next month or so.

So let me spill the beans a little bit... I only took this course because I have such a busy schedule that I was hoping to find a class that was either blended and meeting on the same night as my other class, or completely online. The advisor (I'm not telling who!) said that this would be an easy class where you go to a couple of museums and take pictures of yourself standing in front. Maybe write a paper or two.... you know easy credits. Boy was that ever wrong. This class takes a lot of time and effort, definitely more time than any other course I've taken, but I must say IT HAS BEEN SO WORTH IT! I have learned so much and have really had a good time doing it. This was the perfect course for someone like myself, i.e. someone with absolutely no knowledge of art or art history. The best part about it is that I can't imagine ever having another boring weekend. I now know that anytime it feels like there is just nothing to do...go to a museum!
So thank you, everyone, for sharing your experience with me :)

Finish Up Week!

We have arrived at the final chance to finish up your work for Mod 1.... I'll be doing all of the grades for the class on Friday, October 20th... Time has flown by! I hope that you enjoyed your experience in taking this class... the format and its delivery were new for most of you. My main hope is that you have developed a new found interest and even love of getting out with your loved ones to a museum from time to time. I glanced at Google maps before making my trek and saw that the MET is butted up against Central park and got a general gist of how to get there from the Hudson. My girlfriend and I saw this huge museum and then immediately spotted rock star parking right near it. Out we hopped, rushed up the stairs (after snapping a few choice shots of the statue outside), and then stood in line for 20 minutes. We paid the $30 "donation", got our floor plan, made a quick bathroom stop, and then I looked at the map to plot out our course.... OOPS :) We were in the Museum of Natural History!!!

We ended up at the MET later... I am working on the blog now. Come check it out when you are done laughing ;)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mod1museunexperience.blogspot.com/2007/10/careful-you-too-might-be-this-dumb.html' title='Careful! Always use a pencil inside a museum... That goes for the library area and the archives... Curators are worried that if any pen should get on a piece, it will be much harder to repair than if you use pencil... Most guards are on the look-out for this...

2. Touching.... The need to touch is very human and very powerful when you are drawn to a piece you really like... Sadly, the oils on your hands as well as the abrasion from constant touching would destroy a piece pretty quickly. Museums are in the business of preserving art for future generations.... Guards would pounce on this too....

3. Flash on Camera... You've heard (actually read) me say this before, but flash is also very destructive to delicate pigments in paintings, drawings and prints. Always turn your flash off before entering the museum so you don't give the guards another reason to come running!

4. Tripods are a no-no because they could trip up another patron, who might go flying into that delicate painting, you were trying not to harm by keeping your flash turned off....

That pretty much covers the main points... Remember to take your time, have fun and be amazed....

If you're headed west anytime soon....

....a friend of mine sent me this link:
http://www.chrisjordan.com/current_set2.php?id=?view=XXX_09NNN/

It looks like a very cool exhibit.

Running the Numbers : An American Self-Portrait This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. My underlying desire is to affirm and sanctify the crucial role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming. My only caveat about this series is that the prints must be seen in person to be experienced the way they are intended. As with any large artwork, their scale carries a vital part of their substance which is lost in these little web images. Hopefully the JPEGs displayed here might be enough to arouse your curiosity to attend an exhibition, or to arrange one if you are in a position to do so. The series is a work in progress, and new images will be posted as they are completed, so please stay tuned. ~chris jordan, Seattle, 2007 This series will be exhibited at the Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles, opening Sep 8. My name is Tonya I have been at AMC for since 2005, Psychology is my major, and when I graduate I will have a minor in Sociology. I have three children two boys and a girl. My girl is the oldest she is twelve and my middle child is eight and then I have my infant son who is eight months old. They are definitely part of my strength, and they are why I am in school. "If mommy can do it, then I can do it". You lead by example, so this is my example for them. I have been employed with the City for more than four years with the Section 8 program. I enjoy the work I do, I find it rewarding.

Audio Visual Guide to "Age of Rembrandt"

Holland Cotter, the art critic for the New York Times narrates this look at selected works from the Blockbuster show now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The Age of Rembrandt", in celebration of his 400th anniversary... The museum commissioned a monumental painting after the events of September 11, 2001. Most of you in this class don't respond much to 20th or 21st century art. Parrish, a young artist has been looking back toward classical ideas regarding beauty, allegory and truth in a way that does to modernism what the moderns did to the classics. One can't fail to be impressed.

Take a look at this article.... this will illuminate much....

http://www.sandstead.com/images/artists/parrish/parrish.html

Second Museum Trip

This week I went to the New Britain Museum of American Art.
Please view my blog to see photos!

Have a great week!

Point of view

<img style="float:left; I mean really really. Most people can't even read my handwriting. I am also, apparently, no the best photographer, so I have been wrangeling with picasa to try to make the pictures look better (by the way, I can't get the tutorial video to play, so I'm winging it. Does it work for anyone else?). I also know absolutely nothing about art. That being said... I have, on a number of occasions, been stopped dead in my tracks by a painting or a particular photograph. An old roomate of mine had a Joan Miro print hung up in the living room that I would often find myself staring at for very long periods of time.

I decided to take this course to learn more about a subject that I have so little knowledge in. I hope all you artsy folk will be able to bear with me ;)

Here are some of the things at the museum that caught my eye. The Bard painting is the one I'm going to put in my Blog because I really liked it a lot.

The Griswold

I took my stepson Jared to the Griswold on a Sunday but I had ensure there would be a fair trade, "you come look at paintings with me and then we can paint for the rest of the afternoon". He wasn't too thrilled about the Met overall, actually he told his cousin he couldn't understand why everything in there had "naked" people. So I had to make sure this was going have a good pay off at the end. We really like to paint together so I knew this would be a great place to go to.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RuXnkuPIgsI/AAAAAAAAAG0/hI5oiuxScO4/s320/IMG_2287.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108743970394505922" />

The grounds are so beautiful and inspiring. You can not go there and not feel just great. It truly was a great museum. Beware, they are kind of tough about picture taking! If you say it is for school, they just might let you get a few shots. But not in the main gallery, only the Griswold house. Here are two paintings I really liked.

This one is Henry Ward Rangers' , Autum Woodland. Painted in 1902
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RuXnmePIgtI/AAAAAAAAAG8/_hxH8s6e-4M/s320/IMG_2329.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108744000459277010" />

This one is the one I wrote my paper on. Lucien Abrams', The Orchard. Painted in 1916
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RuXnmuPIguI/AAAAAAAAAHE/3uTM8zxKe9I/s320/IMG_2338.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108744004754244322" />

Jump to my blog to check the rest out. I will say, if I could do it over again, I would not have made this a family outing. He is 8 years old and just didn't find it as interesting. We missed the guided tours (missed the train we needed to make the tour) so we rented the audio-guided headphones. That was the best idea! Jared was able to keep himself entertained with the headset and I was able to really look at the art and not feel rushed.

As many will say, you cannot see the Met in one day. Or at least enjoy each section and truly get a feel for what is there. So I decided we would do a walk through and see what area grabbed me the most.

I found myself spending a lot more time in the Modern Art section upstairs. At this point we weren't even using the map, but rather just letting the art take us on the tour. The first painting I fell in love with was James Rosenquist Gift Wrapped Doll #16. I decided to write my paper on this one piece solely. Check out my blog and see this great piece of art.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwCY-PIgbI/AAAAAAAAAEs/DvDpOLU9-F8/s320/IMG_2150.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105958705577886130" />

After I viewing the dolls, we went into a large, bright room! Most rooms have lower lighting which is no good for trying to get good pictures. But it was more than just the light that drew me to this room. The art work was amazing!!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwCZOPIgcI/AAAAAAAAAE0/KN6bB_ka_yM/s320/IMG_2158.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105958709872853442" />

David Hockney's Large Interior painting was just, cool, for lack of better words. I LOVED the way he painted this picture. Not simple strokes but using his brush as a tool. Here he uses big globs of paint to show texture on a ceiling. The best thing about this painting is that, it makes you think!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwGVOPIggI/AAAAAAAAAFU/o4A-AyCxda4/s320/IMG_2162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105963039199887874" />

Where does the floor end?? Where does the ceiling start?? Why is that chair so big?? Why do all the chairs have different shadows? You can find yourself checking this piece out for quite some time!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwCaOPIgfI/AAAAAAAAAFM/tYSVadKrMgs/s320/IMG_2161.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105958727052722674" />

And then I turn to my left and there he is...Lucas. Chuck Close made this amazing piece by making a grid then making circles like pixels in a photograph. Out of everything I saw, the feel this was the most detailed and creative.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwCZePIgdI/AAAAAAAAAE8/nhwGrfQowEQ/s320/IMG_2173.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105958714167820754" />

Here is a closer picture of eye.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OF-gZl9cL20/RtwCZ-PIgeI/AAAAAAAAAFE/8e1sIrYo7gs/s320/IMG_2171.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105958722757755362" />

After leaving the Modern Art section, I feel everything else was interesting but didn't grab at me and say, "Come here and look at me!" Well, except for Lutz Bacher's photo of Kennedy and Goldwater. I will leave that for you to find! Until next week!!!!
~~~jess~~~
What Do I have to Do This Week?
Welcome all! This is the first week of class. We will use this as the set up week to get all systems operating. During this week you should:
- Read the syllabus, click through the links provided and understand what will be required of you in this class.
- Respond to the email from blogger and click on the link which will take you to a sign in page to join this blog, The Museum Experience. If you don't have a Gmail account, you will cick on the link there and take a minute to create an account. Use that log in to access this blog. Gmail is a Google company that has an amazing array of free services that could change your life... so don't be shy here.... Remember to write down your username (your new email address) and password.
-Create your own blog. This takes a few minutes... choose a template, click publish and you are ready to post to it. Tell us a little about yourself as a first post. You may use the post editor as your word processor to actually write your paper. Please post images with your papers from your outing. Include shots of the museum, and the piece that you are writing about. Use close up shots to help illustrate points you are making in your paper. Papers should be 650 - 900 words long. You may find it easier to use Word to write... Use Tools>Word Count to count your words to check your progress. Take a look at Museum Experience student Tad Gembala's blog to see what I am expecting:
http://silvertone22.blogspot.com/
-Review the class calendar. There are 6 trips out to museums, three assigned and 3 of your choice on the list in the syllabus. Create your first post to your blog with an outline of the trips you will be taking, with dates. Put them on your calendar, invite friends and family and most of all, have fun with this. This is essentially a travel course... you need to travel to do it. You may visit other museums then the the ones listed in the Syllabus. You may find yourself traveling to other cities out of the state for business or pleasure... Check with me first though... Here is a link to the calendar.
-You will write 4 "papers" with photographs and 2 "photo albums" with captions recording your impressions from your museum visits...
-Line up a digital camera and learn how to use it. Learn how to get your images onto your computer, edit them and upload them to the blog. This is easy to do with free Picasa software from Google. http://picasa.google.com/ Learn how to turn off the flash on your camera as flash is never allowed inside the museums.
-Class will run from Monday morning at 11 am until Monday at 11am. I will grade each week's work Monday morning before 11 am. Because unexpected things can happen, there will be a make-up week during the final week of class where you will have the opportunity to make up the grade for 1 week that you missed. Post comments on each others posts and post to this blog each week. Use this blog to tell everyone what you are doing and to invite others to visit your blog as well. At least 1 letter grade will reflect your posting and helpfulness to others in this online community. If you don't contribute, the highest grade you can earn for the week will be a "B".
-Post your blog address and your screen name that you use here in the "comment" link to this post. Or create a new post and put your address there. I won't beable to find you unless you tell me your address.
-Review the video I created on how to post to this blog. (Link on upper left also.)
-All of this will be completed by Tuesday morning, September 4th. If you wish, you can get a head start on your visits and writing and begin your first project this week too.
-Email me if you would like me to call you to help walk you through any of this...
A business major who took this class a couple of years ago remarked, "I never knew that you could take a day and plan an outing to a museum with your family and have a great time! This has been a great experience!" This sums up my hopes and dreams for you in taking this class.
Welcome!
Ceiling of the Great Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Hello everyone! and welcome to the class blog for the Mod 1 class, AH251, The Museum Experience. Here we will post images and comments each week about your adventures on the road as you travel around in your search for the sublime! I will be emailing everyone instructions on how to post on the first day of class.
To get the most out of your online class this Mod, it is important to communicate regularly with other members of the class and with me in this forum..... in fact, it is part of your grade. Post often and post early, to paraphrase a famous statement. I'm looking forward to this experience with you. It is my sincere hope that this class will be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience for you.
I'd like you to create your own blog as well as join this blog. There you will post your papers and photos on a weekly basis. Be sure to post here as this is where we build the class community. Remember to put a link to your blog along with your post here.
This class is all about your primary, personal experience. Many of you may never have been to an art museum before or haven't been since that "boring" school trip in 5th grade. Good writing always begins with what you know, not with what you think you are supposed to know. Treat each outing as an adventure... of one of personal discovery. You task in writing will be about relaying your new enthusiasm to me and the rest of the class in your own blog. Take lots of digital pictures of the artwork and of the museum spaces. Above all.... have fun!
